The Dream Project Media:
Can the Children Save the World? Over 1,000 L.A. students are working on it.
Los Angeles—What did you do today? This is what over 1,000 students in Los Angeles have been grappling with today and for the past three months:
• Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger
• Achieving universal primary education
• Promoting gender equality and empowering women
• Reducing child mortality
• Improving maternal health
• Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
• Ensuring environmental sustainability
• Developing a global partnership for development
In 2000 the U.N. outlined these 8 goals to be realized across the globe by 2015. Together they constitute the U.N. Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs.
A novel educational curriculum called the Dream Project, which was developed right here in Los Angeles, has inspired over 1,000 elementary and middle school students in five different schools to begin to ponder these overarching global problems and to consider solutions to them, since, after all they are the future stewards of our world.
On June 8, from 12:30-1:00 at John Muir Middle School, in front of a student body of 2,000, students will be sharing what they have learned about these goals and what steps they have taken, big and small, to achieve them. Several of the students will also be performing a collaborative Dream Project song on stage with singer/performers Gina Rene, Rich, and Gagnez, a former gang member who now promotes peace and has become an inspiration to the Dream Project students.
These children are learning that they have the power to make a difference. One particularly angry boy was shoved violently up against the lockers by another boy when he exited class last week. Most of the other students scrambled in fear of a fight, but the first boy turned to walk away. When his antagonizer relentlessly taunted him, he said, “Dude, I’m not going to fight you. I’m in the Dream Project. I don’t do that anymore,” and he walked away.

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION
5 schools celebrate the work 1,000 local students have done to heal the Earth. On April 17 students from Celerity, SMASH, NIMITZ, and Franklin High School will gather at John Muir Middle School to celebrate their accomplishments and to share the lessons and inspiration they have taken from The Dream Project.
